Book of the Year

The book of the Year is “Yoga Girl”, by Rachel Brathen. If you are looking for motivation, inspiration, or a new outlook on life, you should read this book. It is one of my favorite books and I have no problem reading it over and over again. Rachel takes you on a journey through her life and how yoga has helped her along the way and where she is today. She also shares her thoughts on balance in your life, which I think is important for everyone to hear about. This book helped me look at yoga in a different light as well as my life. It has also helped me to remember that I should do my best, every single day. She is a true role model to me. Rachel taught me that yoga isn’t about holding poses you see on Instagram today, but about going to your mat to feel. I have talked about Rachel in a previous post and shared this quote, which I would like to share again.

The Goal of Yoga

(No, it’s not the handstand).

The yoga pose is not the goal. Becoming flexible is not the goal. Standing on your hands is not the goal.

The goal is to create space where you were once stuck. To unveil the layers of protection you’ve built around your heart. To appreciate your body and become aware of the mind and the noise it creates. To make peace with who you are. The goal is to love, well… You.

Come to your yoga mat to feel; not to accomplish. Shift your focus and your heart will grow.

Rachel shows several different yoga poses and gives you a detailed description on how to do each pose as well as sharing some healthy recipes. My favorite is her green smoothie. I try to have one every morning. My favorite yoga sequence is sun salutation A & B. I try to do that at least once a day as well.

Yoga girl gave me inspiration and made me feel like everything was going to be ok. Even if yoga isn’t your thing, it’s still worth the read. You might even want to try yoga after reading it, who knows!

Pick up a copy today! You can find it on Amazon or Rachel’s website. I hope it changes your life as much as it changed mine!
